Crafting your BHAG Strategic Plan

How do you create a company culture where people enjoy the work they do and look forward to the week ahead? On this Looking Forward to Monday Minute we are going to explore the BHAG Strategic Plan.

The BHAG is a term coined by business author Jim Collins. It stands for Big Hairy Audacious Goal. The BHAG is the incredible aim that your company aspires to achieve well into the future. In a future Looking Forward to Monday Minute we’ll talk in more depth about the BHAG. For the purpose of today, we will focus on the BHAG Strategic Plan. The strategic plan is HOW your business is going to achieve its compelling vision, i.e. your Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG).

Within the Advantage Family, which includes Advantage|ForbesBooks, Magnetic Marketing, BPR 360, and mLive, our BHAG is to actively serve 100,000 Members by December 31, 2023. How are we going to achieve this incredible aim, this compelling vision? We are going to follow our BHAG Strategic Plan.

We launched our first BHAG Strategic Plan on Jan 1, 2014. At the time, our BHAG was “Road to 1000.” Our compelling vision was to actively serve 1,000 Members by Dec 31, 2018, 5-years from our launch date. We not only achieved our target, we exceeded it so it made sense that we create another 5-year plan that was introduced on Jan 1, 2019. We upped the ante with a “Road to 100K” BHAG. Our target is to actively serve 100,000 Members by Dec 31, 2023, 5-years from the launch date. We’re going to achieve 100,000 active Members per year by following our BHAG Strategic Plan between now and Dec 31, 2023.

First things first. In most businesses, your team doesn’t know where the company is going. In other words, most companies have no defined compelling vision or BHAG. When a company has no “true north,” how do your employees know what they are working toward?

Second, if your company does have a compelling vision, the team has no idea how it will be achieved. You as the entrepreneur, the CEO, and the visionary have to help your team understand what true north really is. You have to define where the business wants to go. Then, you have to articulate a Strategic Plan of how your company is going to achieve its vision.

If any of your employees wonder how in the world the company is going to achieve its target, all they have to do is look at your BHAG Strategic Plan. It will provide your team all the answers they need. No mystery! No guessing! This is why the BHAG Strategic Plan is so important.

To keep it simple, we’ve put our BHAG Strategic Plan on a wallet card. Every Advantage Family Team Member has the company’s 5-year BHAG Strategic Plan in their pocket! For the purpose of this article, I’m including a picture of our previous Strategic Plan, Road to 1000. On the front side it has our BHAG strategic plan. On the back it says Working Together as One Advantage on the Road to 1000. We also have our Core Purpose, our Core Values and the Principles and Practices of Working Together. If a Team Member ever gets lost and doesn’t know how we are going to get to where we want to go, all they have to do is pull out their wallet!

The BHAG Strategic Plan creates clarity and alignment. It is a critical asset to any company that wants to create a culture and a work environment where every single person says “I’m Looking Forward to Monday!”
