The most talked about thing in a Looking Forward to Monday culture

How do you create a culture and environment in your company where people enjoy the work they do and look forward to the work week ahead? On this Looking Forward to Monday Minute we are going to explore Dreamboards and the Dream On program.

There’s probably not a single employee in your organization that gets up in the morning and says, “hot damn, I get to go to work to make my boss rich today!” And, your employees have a job to do.They come to work each day to help you, the entrepreneur, achieve your dreams. The dream you have for building your business. Wouldn’t it be neat if you could return the favor and help your employees achieve their dreams too?

Years ago we created Dreamboards and the Dream On program for Advantage Family team members. I got the kernel for this idea years before from entrepreneur John Ratliff.

Here’s how it works. At the 90 day anniversary of a team member with our company, they sit down with our Director of Team Member Success and they’re given a Dreamboard planning sheet. This helps them think through the dreams they have for their life. Very few people have ever stopped to sit down and think about what they want to accomplish and what dreams they have. After they complete this planning sheet we send it to a member of our graphic design team and we whip up a really cool dream board.

Dreamboards are printed on foam board, printed onto laptop computer covers, and available digitally too. Dreamboards create fun and interesting conversations amongst the team and are the most talked about item when clients and guests visit our office. It is also a unique differentiator that puts you and your company in a “category of one.”

When it comes to rewarding an employee for doing great work, most companies, if they reward a person at all, give money. Great idea, except, most times it is added to their paycheck and directly deposited into their bank account, meaning they may not notice and appreciate it.

Instead, what if you rewarded an exceptional employee by granting one of their dreams? Something they’ve always wanted or wanted to do? Not only would you make their day, their week, maybe even their year, they would surely never forget and would almost certainly tell all of their friends and family.

Over the years we’ve granted some pretty cool dreams. We sent one team member on a trip to Cuba. Another on a surf vacation in Costa Rica. One team member wanted to attain a master yoga certification, so we sent her to a retreat center in Virginia to accomplish that. Another team member won a wardrobe makeover. And the list goes on.

With the Dream on program, it is something people will remember for the rest of their life. It’s also something they’ll talk about and tell their friends and family about too.

The late Zig Ziglar said “you can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”
