This 1 Thing Will Create a Culture of Recognition in Your Company

How do you create a culture in your company where people enjoy the work they do and look forward to the week ahead? On this Looking Forward to Monday Minute we are going to explore Caught In The Act of Greatness

If I walk into your office and ask “Who in this company is being over recognized? Please raise your hand. Who in here is being recognized by their boss or their peers so much that it makes you sick?” Not a single hand would rise into the air.

It’s impossible for entrepreneurs, leaders, and managers to over-recognize the people on their team. We put the burden of recognition on OUR shoulders, thinking WE have to see everything. In truth, this is impossible to do. Especially if you have a large company. There are so many people doing so many great things that you, the leader, will never be able to lay your own two eyes on everything.

In the Advantage Family, we implemented Caught In The Act of Greatness (CITAOG). This is a gem I got from my dear friend and ForbesBooks Author Jack Daly. The idea behind Caught In The Act of Greatness is to rely on each and every team member for recognizing their peers who do exceptional work and exceptional things to serve our members and to help our company achieve its goals.

Implementation is VERY simple and easy. Every team member has the opportunity to catch people doing the right things and give them a “high five” by recognizing them for their incredible work. If all of your team members work in physical offices, it can be as simple as supplying CITAOG nomination cards. At Advantage, team members simply send an email to our CITAOG email address. We especially like it when team members tie the nominee’s act of greatness to one of our core values or principles and practices of Working Together.

Each week during our All Hands Company Huddle we read select CITAOG nominations that were received the previous week. At the end of each month, during our monthly Kickoff, we recognize everyone nominated in the past month and draw a name for a prize, which can be something as small as a Starbucks gift card or something as large as an iPad or Beats headphones. The purpose is to show people that we appreciate the incredible work they are doing.

The most important thing to remember is CITAOG drives the job of recognition down to the front lines, and involves every person in the company. Now, recognition is everyone’s job! CITAOG requires YOU to ask every team member to have their eyes and ears open to identify people doing exceptional work. CITAOG is such a simple and easy thing to do. Every business should implement it.

It’s impossible to over-recognize people. Each and every person craves to be appreciated and recognized for doing great work. When that happens, people Look Forward to Monday!
